To provide accommodation in two storeys of a building as replacement of Civil Engineering accommodation destroyed during the Second World War.

To provide initial accommodation for a new Department of Architecture on a third storey of the same building.

Division of Costs:

Cost is to be divided equally between funds allocated under C.D. & W. and C. & M.E.S. votes, as detailed in the tel. 1900 of 1950 from the Secretary of State for the Colcnies to the Governor Hong Kong.

Administrative & Financial Control:

The University of Hong Kong has been recognized as an administering authority for the purpose of administrative and financial control of monies allocated from the C.D. & N. fund. Secretary of State tel. 1900 of Dec. 22, 1950, refers.

Basis of Application:

As the University was advised in 1948 that £250,000 would be available as an ex gratia grant from H.. Treasury and as the need for rehousing displaced Civil Engineering units and a new Department of Architecture was urgent, the necessary building was duly erected, and opened in March, 1950, in the expectation that the cost of erection and equipment would be met from the Treasury grant. Since then, the grants available under C.D. & W. and C. & M.E.3. votes have been fused, and it is assumed that this application must follow the terms of others for allocation from these grants, so that funds may be made available for one-half of the building from C.D. & W. vote and one-half from C. & M.E.S. vote.
